Zohar is born in the Jewish ghetto of Cairo. He owes his life to his Arab caretaker, Jihanne, who nurses both him and her daughter Masreya for 40 days. Fifteen years later, Zohar and Masreya bump into each other and the attraction is immediate. They have always secretly loved each other even though their relationship would be forbidden. Masreya becomes a famous ballerina and meets many men, but her only true love will always be Zohar. Acclaimed author Tobie Nathan paints a picture of an Egypt that no longer exists, but is kept alive in the memory of his protagonists.
